Mod Design

Mods (or modules more formally) make up a good portion of publication designs. They divide the content into relevant sections and give an opportunity to spotlight certain people or events. Take a look at some of my favorites!

This story mod was probably my most challenging mod yet. I not only took all of the photos, but I also chose which to use, cut them out, and arranged them. I wanted to highlight the fact that we're undefeated and some of the players that contributed the most that. It is also a good way to get all of the seniors on the page and leaving room in the other photo boxes for the people who get less time on the court.

This story mod is one of my favorites. I love the combination of a graphic and a short story. It was nice to promote a more eco-friendly and economic style.

This wasn't necessary the original idea, but I think it's so much better. Originally the circles were supposed to be filled with colored text to represent what side they were on, but by adding photos to them it makes them much more graphic. The different sizes adds to the composition and shows us which one we should look at first.

I wasn't sure how this mod was going to turn out and it was a little nerve-wracking to spend so much time on cutouts that may not even work out. It was a great way to utilize a small space to cover several people with both a quote and a photo.

(Smale would like me to point out that I took the dominant photo and chose the colors.)

I had so much fun designing this story mod. Alternate story forms are supposed to be unique and creative, and this one definitely stands out. Just looking at the boxes down the side hints Monopoly to the reader, but why is it on the Social Studies page? It intrigues the reader and allows for more photos on the spread.

For this design, I was looking for a unique way to show how much money was raised. I knew I wanted to do cutouts before I even thought of the train because I wanted to show the motion and have the photos interacting with each other.

The whole yearbook is full of quotes, but I've never seen a poem in a yearbook, especially a handwritten one. This mod was a bit of a challenge because I had to get a photo of someone reading their poem and hope they were okay with publishing it. I brought in my Ipad one day and asked him to write his poem for me. Seeing his handwriting gives the poem personality and gives viewers something interesting to look at.

Like the thrifting mod at the top, this is another example of a graphic and short story. In this one, I used as an opportunity to get more photos on the page and get opinions from any student that wanted to be surveyed. While the story itself is about the student section leaders, the pie chart gets the perspective of other students.
